MONTEVERDI • L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA
Power games in ancient Rome
Where there is power, there is resistance: in Claudio Monteverdi's opera, these two forces warp the brains and hearts of empresses, soldiers and court ladies. The philosopher Seneca strives in vain to calm the yearnings and selfishness of all involved. The scandalous rise of Poppea to Roman empress at Nero's side is at the centre of Claudio Monteverdi's last opera. Kerstin Avemo makes her debut as Poppea. Anne Sofie von Otter continues her collaboration with director Christoph Marthaler at Theater Basel. Laurence Cummings conducts the La Cetra Barockorchester.

W. A. MOZART • REQUIEM
An ode to life
Mozart's unfinished 'Requiem' as a visually powerful and stirring scenic meditation on disappearance and transience. Complemented by lesser-known sacred works by Mozart, the requiem is transformed into a celebration of life in Romeo Castellucci's production. In ritualistic choreographies, the choir and a group of dancers merge into the energy centre of the evening. Having fallen victim to Corona in the 20/21 season, the now internationally acclaimed co-production with the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Adelaide Festival finally comes to Basel. Ivor Bolton, principal conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra, will conduct.

GIUSEPPE VERDI • RIGOLETTO
Jealousy drama in a world of appearances
An evil macho society reigns at the court of Mantua. The duke passes his boredom with countless amorous adventures and the humiliation of his subordinates. Rigoletto, the court jester, plays his cynical jokes. But when his daughter Gilda is targeted by the Duke, Rigoletto's world collapses. After 'Don Carlos', director Vincent Huguet and conductor Michele Spotti devote themselves to another masterpiece by Giuseppe Verdi. French star designer Pierre Yovanovitch creates the stage set.

World Premiere
Music theatre about the unspeakable
Composer - Anda Kryeziu
Director - Caterina Cianfarini
Stage design - Eva Veronica Born
Costumes - Karoline Gundermann
Dramaturgy - Meret Kündig
Elisabet Vogler suddenly stops speaking from one day to the next. In the seclusion of a cottage by the sea, a young nurse named Alma takes care of Elisabet and does everything she can to get her speaking again. Ingmar Bergman's film is an enigmatic psychological drama about two women whose obsessive relationship causes the edges of their personalities to crumble. In their adaptation, composer Anda Kryeziu and director Caterina Cianfarini explore the limits of what can be said and the actual nature of human identity. Through the use of live electronics and sound alteration, the composition explores the processes of perception and the relationship between the body, technology and voice. This is the first ever musical theatre production of Theater Basel to be staged at Gare du Nord.
